Your checkering appears very worn, so if you don't repoint it you may be disappointed with it's appearance compared to the new finish on the stock. The white line spacer material is available from Brownell's or you can remove the one on the butt plate so they match. The DVD is very helpful if you don't have any experience.

I just redid a Sako L579 Mannlicher stock & Z-Strip remover cut thru the Sako finish like butter. Fireball) & it is one of my favorite rifles to shoot. I have this model with a custom stock & barrel (221 Rem. I prefer the one piece Leupold ringmounts, as they allow more latitude in adjusting eye relief & come in more height choices to accommodate the new bigger belled scopes available today. If you are a purist & insist everything be original, Sako rings from that period can be found for sale on this site & other gun sale sites from time to time. These are sweet rifles & deserve a quality stock finish to enhance the quality metal work, which appears from the pics to be in great shape. It could have been made in the early 60's.

I would guess it was more likely made in the late 50's rather than mid 50's, but with Sako serial #'s one can never be sure. If you refinish the stock with a nice hand rubbed oil & remove the varnish from & repoint the checkering you will have a beautiful example of what this rifle looked like when new & increase it's value to something north of $1000. Does the barrel have the original front sight with hood? It appears that who ever applied the second finish removed & lost the white spacer for the grip cap, but that can easily be replaced. The rear peep sight is worth $100 plus by itself. You have a nice L46 Vixen Varmint Model that is worth (in my opinion) around $800 even though the original finish has been covered with some kind of varnish.
